Meet our miniature donkeys for a relaxing break in the countryside

Rosalie and Ferdinand, the new Cabottes mascots

Since the spring, we’ve welcomed two new recruits who are as furry as they are endearing: Rosalie and Ferdinand (aka Rosie and Ferdi to their friends). A little-known breed in France, miniature donkeys are, as their name suggests, smaller than the classic donkeys we usually know, such as the famous Baudet du Poitou. They have a character very similar to that of dogs: very gentle and easy to handle, miniature donkeys are excellent companions for children. Petting, brushing, playing: Rosalie and Ferdinand love human company. If you’re looking for them, you’ll find them enjoying the good grass in our meadow below our accommodation. Don’t hesitate to pay them a visit, they’re just waiting for you (although if you arrive during their siesta, they may not come to you straight away, as rest is sacred, just like a snack!)

The benefits of miniature donkeys

Why did you adopt two donkeys? Apart from their adorable faces, they are clearly very easy animals to live with. They’re affectionate but also independent, they’re curious but understand when not to stick their noses in the pockets of visitors in search of little treats and above all… they’re calm by nature (even if they sometimes have their 15 minutes of madness) which makes their company an excellent remedy for the ambient stress for the adults and great soothing friends for the little ones. Cuddle therapy guaranteed: just spend a few minutes with them to tame them and gain their trust. After that, they’ll come and cuddle up to you and let you handle them without a care in the world, especially with children. If you’re coming as a family to Les Cabottes, our two little furry creatures should turn your children’s heads – a perfect activity for channelling their sometimes boundless energy, looking after an animal helps them to concentrate, and the meadow surrounding the donkey house is also a perfect playground for running, playing and rolling around in the tall grass.

Tour of the Burgundy vineyards in a 2CV

Trade in your gleaming car for a 2CV with deliciously old-fashioned charm

Discovering Burgundy by car is a classic thanks to the magnificent wine route that passes through all the major villages and starts just a stone’s throw from Les Cabottes. But for an even more memorable experience, we strongly recommend that you leave your car in the car park andopt for a means of transport that’s off the beaten track: the 2CV.

You have two options:

Let yourself be guided by the comments of Mélanie, the driver-guide, who knows a thing or two about Burgundy’s vineyards. Madeleine de Proust when you sit down in this old 2CV, completely renovated by its owner, Mélanie will take you around and show you the winegrowers she loves. The ideal way to let yourself be carried along for the ride.

Good to know: in addition to her 2CV, Mélanie has just added a superb estafette to her fleet – perfect if you are more than 3 people, as this is the maximum capacity of the 2CV.

take the reins and drive yourself in one of the 2CVs freshly renovated by Marine and Cyril from Escapade Française, with your hair blowing in the wind, to go wherever you want and discover the vineyards in all their nooks and crannies. The perfect solution if you want to decide the itinerary and let yourself be surprised by spontaneous breaks at the turn of a pretty viewpoint or a remarkable monument.

Good to know: hire is available for a day or a weekend – you can also add treats to your trip or opt for the pack that includes an overnight stay… at Les Cabottes, of course!

Our must-haves for young and old

Have you been to see Rosalie and Ferdinand yet? Even though your little ones will probably find it hard to leave them, they’ll be just as happy to follow you on your adventures to explore the area around Les Cabottes, as there are plenty of kid-friendly activities to do with them. In fact, Burgundy has no shortage of beautiful treasures that should pique the curiosity of every member of the tribe. To help you find your way around, here’s a short but not exhaustive list of our favourite activities to share:

1/ The Château de Savigny-les-Beaune and its impressive and eccentric collections of cars, aeroplanes, fire engines and other historic vehicles, all set in breathtaking surroundings. You can buy the estate’s wines to round off your visit in style.

A 35-minute drive from Les Cabottes

2/ The Fallot mustard factory in Beaune to awaken your taste buds and understand how the transformation of a small seed can lead to one of the best mustards in the world. You can also stock up on piquant sweets in the shop.

25 minutes by car from Les Cabottes, about 2 hours by electric bike.

3/ Le vélorail du Morvan in Cordesse to discover the beauty of green Burgundy (yes, it’s not all vineyards!) with its endless forest landscapes and the smell of undergrowth that tickles your nose as the carriage flies through the air. Note that the velorail can hold a maximum of 4 people – 2 pedalling and 2 sitting behind – so it’s up to you to choose the right team!

Just 25 minutes from Les Cabottes, with a chance to visit the pretty town of Autun in the process.

4/ The cassissium at Nuits-Saint-Georges to find out all about this little berry so present in Burgundy (in kir, of course, but not only). A particularly educational and interactive visit to immerse young and old alike in the world of blackcurrants. Cocktail workshops are held every first Friday of the month (although this is more for adults than children, as you’ll have gathered).

38 minutes’ drive from Les Cabottes

5/ Acro Givry, where your little ones can let off steam in the enchanting setting of this pretty forest on the Côte Chalonnaise. Between April and September, Burgundy’s biggest adventure park welcomes you with its 30 courses, suitable for all ages. We haven’t tried it out yet, but all our little neighbours are fans! And for the less adventurous, there’s also a mini golf course in the shade of the hundred-year-old oak trees.
