What to do for a weekend in Burgundy

Towns to visit: Dijon, Beaune and Chalon-sur-Saône

Dijon, the beautiful

The capital of Burgundy, Dijon is a city that has it all. It’s a reasonable size to explore on foot, with historic monuments scattered all over the place to give it a unique character, and charming boutiques to delight both the eyes and the taste buds. Our recommendation: start your visit by stopping off at the Tourist Office to buy a map of the Chouette trail. The map will guide you through every nook and cranny of the town, helping you to discover its heritage, its not-to-be-missed attractions and also its secrets, hidden away behind sumptuous porte-cochères. Gingerbread, mustard… Dijon wouldn’t be Dijon without the little delicacies that have made it famous the world over. Drop in at Mulot et Fallot to take home some delicious souvenirs of your visit to the region. By night, Dijon is splendid, especially at Christmas time.

Beaune, the epicurean

Beaune is the perfect blend of all our heritages: historical, cultural and gastronomic. From its glazed tiles that sparkle in the sunlight, to its famous buildings such as the Hospices, featured in the no less famous film La Grande Vadrouille, and of course its vineyards that produce some of the finest wines in the world. Gastronomy is not to be outdone, with restaurants serving traditional Burgundian cuisine (don’t leave without trying the oeufs meurette!) as well as avant-garde cuisine prepared by talented young chefs who are shaking up the rules. There are also several Michelin-starred restaurants if you fancy a gourmet lunch. If you take the Route des Grands Crus during your weekend in Burgundy, there are plenty of restaurants to tempt your taste buds.

Chalon-sur-Saône, the cultural city

With its historic quarter, its many bridges spanning the Saône and its pretty shops, Chalon is a town well worth a visit. Although less well known than its neighbours Beaune and Dijon, Chalon is not without its tourist attractions – quite the contrary. Its trump card? A history steeped in culture, as it is the birthplace of photography. Nicéphore Niépce, the inventor of photography, was born and grew up in Chalon-sur-Saône. A museum dedicated to him now houses 3 million images and over 10,000 cameras and objects, some of them unique, such as the “Discovery Chamber”, the world’s first camera used by Nicéphore Niépce.

Must-do activities between Côte d’Or and Saône-et-Loire: wine tasting, electric bikes and walks in Morvan

Take part in a Burgundy wine tasting session

It’s hard to talk about Burgundy without mentioning its wine heritage, with its world-famous crus. To discover them, we invite you to our daily wine tastings in our vaulted cellar. After scouring the area around Les Cabottes for several months (and we’re still adding to the menu), we’ve selected our favourite wines from a number of different estates. We invite you to discover 6 of them, mixing whites and reds, thanks to Felix’s educational and accessible explanations, which appeal to all profiles, from beginners to wine experts. You’ll be able to stroll between Santenay, Saint-Romain and even the Côte de Nuits, in short to discover the finest crus of the region (and even the country, let’s be chauvinistic!). We offer this tasting every day at 11am.

Discover the vineyards by electric bike along the Voie des Vignes (Vineyard Trail)

Our hotel is located right in the heart of the vineyards, in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune to be precise. The Voie des Vignes, a former railway line now transformed into a path reserved for cyclists and pedestrians, links the most beautiful villages in the vineyards and passes right through our little village of Change. You can hire electric bikes directly from our hotel and reach the Voie des vignes in just a couple of pedal strokes. Armed with your map, you’re free to explore the vineyards, take breaks to visit villages like Meursault and Pommard, or cycle along the Canal de Bourgogne. An excellent way to soothe the nerves, an electric bike ride is an effortless way to discover the region.

Explore one of France’s most beautiful regional parks: the Morvan

When we think of Burgundy, we inevitably think of the vineyards, but Burgundy is full of other treasures, like its regional nature park, which has all the makings of a small Canada and is quite simply one of the most beautiful in the region, and even in the country – we’re talking about the Morvan, of course. With its giant pine forests, huts and lakes, this unspoilt gem offers superb views and endless walks. Just 30 minutes from Les Cabottes, the Morvan is the perfect getaway for nature lovers looking to unwind. Our tip: take along a picnic hamper lovingly put together by us (and made especially with good local produce) to enjoy the great outdoors in peace and quiet, without having to worry about lunch.

Attractive cultural visits with an eclectic mix: Châteaux de Savigny-les-Beaune, Karrière and Hospices de Beaune

THE visit that will appeal to young and old alike: the Château de Savigny-les-Beaune

The Château is beautiful, but the main attraction is the incredible collections built up over the years by its late owner, who had a passion for racing cars of all kinds. Classic cars, planes, fire engines… It’s the kind of visit that will leave a lasting impression for an unusual night or weekend in Burgundy. The opinion of young and old alike is unanimous: a visit to the Château de Savigny is a must when you’re in the region.

A former stone quarry transformed into an open-air art gallery: the unusual Karrière

Imagine large slabs of stone cut vertically during the first phase of the site’s life, then covered with works of art during its second life. The result is an unusual, rare site that appeals to all ages. The place impresses as much as it pleases. La Karrière offers blank pages to local and visiting artists to express their talent. The styles are different, but what they have in common is the magnificence of their strokes. If you’re taking the Route des Vins towards Dijon during your stay in Burgundy, don’t hesitate to stop off at this unusual place, just a stone’s throw from Nuits-Saint-Georges.

The famous Hospices de Beaune with its distinctive glazed roof

The Hospices is one of the most visited sites in Burgundy Franche Comté. Some people know this Burgundian landmark for its architecture, others for its history closely linked to wine (every year the famous Hospices Wine Sale takes place, with the funds raised supporting the main mission of the site, which is none other than a hospital), but what has largely contributed to making the Hospices a household name is La Grande Vadrouille, since several scenes were filmed within its walls.

Well-being options to enhance your weekend of discovery in Burgundy

The benefits of a wood-fired Nordic bath

If you choose to put down your bags in a wooden micro-house (also known as a “tiny house”) during your stay in Burgundy, you’ll have access to your own Nordic spa. Standing proudly on the cabin’s terrace, the water in your Nordic spa will be kept at an ideal temperature of 37°C from the moment you arrive until you leave, so you can enjoy it to the full. You don’t have to worry about keeping the water warm: if you stay several nights in our hotel, your Nordic spa will always be ready for you, day or night. For a tender moment with your loved one, a moment of disconnection on your own or a family holiday, the Nordic spa is perfect for a moment of absolute relaxation. The warmth of the water, the scent of wood tannins and the view of nature form a magical cocktail that will charm young and old alike. Our little secret for keeping our customers happy during their stay? Bring them the magic combo of an aperitif board and a bottle of Burgundy wine directly to their spa, under the starry ceilings, or in the warmth of their cabin.

A tailor-made massage

Elodie Rigaud, a professional masseuse, comes to our hotel on request to treat our guests to an in-room massage. She offers a wide range of ‘classic’ massages, as well as Ayurvedic massages. Softness and well-being are the order of the day to accompany you during your stay with us. For a night, a weekend or a week of relaxation, Elodie will be delighted to come and meet you and offer you a massage lasting 45 minutes, 1 hour or more. You choose the type of massage you would like, and Elodie can of course advise you. And if you’re coming to Les Cabottes with your family, Elodie also offers a children’s massage to make your stay unforgettable. To find out more about Elodie’s range of massages, click here.

The Santenay thermal spa

Our hotel is located in the heart of Burgundy, just a few minutes from the pretty village of Santenay. Santenay is not only famous for its vineyards, but also for its thermal baths. Closed for several years, they reopened a few months ago. While the facilities are reserved for spa-goers in the morning, they are open to everyone in the afternoon. This means you can relax in hot or cold baths, a spa, jacuzzi or hammam, as you wish. To find out more about what the Santenay spa has to offer, click here.

All these good ideas make you want to come and spend a night or even a weekend in Burgundy? At Les Cabottes, we offer several types of accommodation to meet the needs and desires of our customers. Depending on whether you’re more into the unusual or the old-fashioned, we can offer you the chance to sleep in a wooden cabin overlooking the vines, or to stay in one of the oldest houses in the village, renovated with passion by our craftsmen.
